The E-49 Charger R/T would be the last of the true race-bred production cars from Chrysler Australia. The attention-getting supercars of the early '70s soon came to the attention of safety advocates, which led to pressure to tone down performance. The manufacturers were already preparing to up the ante, with Chrysler masterminding a high-performance four-speed 340 Charger R/T, while a Phase 4 Falcon was in the works at Ford, and a V-8 Torana was being developed at GM. But the political climate was enough for the manufacturers to dump all of these plans. Chrysler did follow through with a 340-powered Charger, but rather than a fire-breathing four-speed R/T, the engine was an option on the personal luxury Charger 770 model and available only with an automatic transmission. The detuned E55 340-powered Charger 770 was well over a second slower in the quarter than the E-49 Hemi 6. Valiant Charger production continued with many minor styling revisions through to the CM version in 1978, but the raw performance of the first of the series VH cars was never matched for performance, styling, or visual appeal. The VH Charger and their Hemi 6 engines set the standard in Australia by which performance cars would be judged for decades to come.
